| Sharing Their Blessings with Awana - A Stock Story |
In 1955, while studying nursing in Chicago, one of Edith "Edie" Sheeldo's friends invited her to a party at the North Side Gospel Center. She began attending the church and continued even after she married her husband, Ronald. They eventually found a church closer to their home, Kildare Avenue Baptist Church.
The Commander at Kildare Baptist Church was Arnie Abrahamsen. Arnie immediately recruited Ron and Edie to work in the Awana Clubs. Edie started as a leader in Chums. Shortly thereafter, the Chums Director left and Edie was asked to take on the leadership of the Chums. Edie says it was then that she learned to love the Awana program.
A few years later, the Sheedlo's moved to Antioch, Illinois, where they began attending Fox Lake Baptist Church. The pastor told them that he wanted to get a children's ministry started. Ron and Edie suggested Awana. Based on their suggestion, Fox Lake Baptist Church started Awana Clubs in 1962. Ron and Edie were the first Commanders. Through the years, Edie also served as a leader, Director, and secretary.
One evening, 30 years later, Ron told Edie that because God had blessed them financially, he wanted to share the blessing with Awana. Edie agreed. From that time on, Ron and Edie have been regular contributors to Awana. When Ron went to be with the Lord in 1994, Edie decided that she wanted to continue the legacy Ron had begun. She has continued to contribute regularly to Awana with gifts of stock.
"Awana was always an important ministry to us," Edie says. "I have seen the value of the program: boys and girls saved, parents reached with the gospel, and leaders trained. I am particularly excited about what Awana is doing around the world. It makes me happy that I can do something to help this ministry."
