| The Gift That Goes On and On - A Gift Annuity Story |
Why would anyone who finally retired want to work in Awana... serve as a co-commander... or join the local school board? The answer is simple. Ken Frizane wants to make a difference! He explains: "As an Awana commander, I have the opportunity to impact 30 teens. As a member of a public school board, I could have the privilege of affecting the lives of more than 13,000 teenagers."
Ken and his wife, Grace, have been involved with the Awana program since the 1950s when they attended Awana at the North Side Gospel Center. As a young girl, Grace attended Awana on Saturday afternoon, while Ken joined the boys at Awana on Friday night. Later as teens, they began working with the Awana program at the Elmwood Park Bible Church. "We saw and experienced God's love and blessings in new and exciting ways," Grace remembers.
After high school, both attended a Chicago Junior college after which Ken went off to study at the University of Illinois while Grace attended Moody Bible Institute. The two kept in close contact, and were married in 1965. As a young couple, they stayed involved with the youth at their church through Awana and as lay leaders of the high school group.
"I remember one family in particular," Grace recalls, "they had six kids. Mom and dad were not interested in church, so we picked up the kids every week so they could attend Awana and Sunday School. Of course, that was in the days before seat belts, and we just piled the kids in the backseat."
The oldest child, Jodi, became a Christian while she was in Awana. Recently, the Frizanes received a note from her saying, "Thank you for caring and picking us up each week." Today Jodi is married to a Christian state policeman and their daughter recently married a youth pastor.
"You sow the seeds and never know how God will use your ministry. The gift just goes on and on," Grace explains. After working in Awana for years, Ken and Grace just recently became co-commanders at their church in Mt. Prospect.
Taking their new mission of guiding 45 leaders seriously, the Frizanes attended Commander College at Awana this past January. "The experience was wonderful, and we are now in regular contact with other Awana commanders across the country," Ken says.
God is blessing the lives and ministry of the Frizanes. Just last month, they had three of their T&T kids accept Jesus as their Savior. "Sometimes we only have these kids in Awana for a year, so we constantly realize the need to redeem the time," comments Grace.
Now preparing for the future, the Frizanes have put together a living trust. Grace explains, "We just wanted to be able to use our finances to bless others like Awana has blessed us." They also established a gift annuity, which will not only offer the Frizanes a secure lifetime income and tax benefits, but will benefit Awana and touch countless boys and girls for Jesus Christ.
