Children have always been a part of Dave and Connie's lives. First there were the seven children of their own - named in alphabetical order so no one would forget who came first. Then there were the hundreds of Awana kids they worked with through the years.
Finally there were the 98 foster children Dave and Connie took in while they were raising their own children. Connie explains, "Most of the boys and girls who came to stay with us came because of some type of emergency placement, so they lived with us only a short time."
The children being placed with them were being removed from their homes because the children were considered to be in some type of danger due to abuse, neglect, or some other reason. These were children desperately needing the love and kindness of a godly, Christian family. And as Dave and Connie faithfully opened their home and hearts to these innocent children, God used them to share even more. "Of course, if the foster children happened to be with us on Awana night, we took them along with us to church where they would hear the Gospel. Some even asked Christ to be their personal Savior. Today we do not know where they are, but we know that God does."
There is a verse in Psalms 27:10 which reads, "When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up." For numerous children, Dave and Connie were literally God's hands outstretched in love to these needy boys and girls.
So now that Dave is retired and there are no more children at home, what fills the days and nights of this couple? "Well, we always spend most of the summer up helping at Camp Awana. But one of our hobbies is attending world fairs. We have literally been around the world." Dave and Connie also took the opportunity to invest one week of their lives for God by going overseas to help train future Awana leaders half-a-world away. As Dave remembers, "The commitment and enthusiasm of the potential Awana leaders who came to the training was thrilling! Knowing some walked for two days to be there is sobering."
Wherever Dave and Connie go across the United States, they always check the yellow pages or web to find a church to attend on Sunday. And what kind of church do they look for? "One that offers Awana," laughs Connie.
Recently, Dave established an Awana Gift Annuity for Connie. For such an active, "young" couple, some might consider that a curious thing to do. Dave lovingly replies, "I was concerned my wife would have the income she needed if something happened to me. That is why we established an Awana Gift Annuity. The annuity provides a steady, secure income, and Connie will not have to worry."
